{"id":19,"date":"2015-02-17T04:13:49","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T04:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/findingourroots.ca\/?page_id=19"},"modified":"2015-02-17T04:13:49","modified_gmt":"2015-02-17T04:13:49","slug":"finding-our-roots-at-arnprior-mcnabbraeside-archives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/findingourroots.ca\/?page_id=19","title":{"rendered":"Finding Our Roots at the Arnprior &#038; McNab\/Braeside Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last summer I felt really blessed to be invited to speak to Patrick\u2019s Family History Group (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adarchives.org\/PFHG.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">http:\/\/www.adarchives.org\/PFHG.htm<\/span><\/a> ), at the Arnprior Library.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick\u2019s Family History Group is a wonderful family history research group named in honour of Patrick Wohler.\u00a0 Patrick was a wonderful journalist, and genealogist.\u00a0 I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Patrick on occasions, and meeting him at various family history conferences.\u00a0 When reporting a story I admired how Patrick sought out the true facts of the matter.\u00a0 I shared this admiration that I had for Patrick\u00a0with Patrick\u2019s Family History Group, and encouraged each member to follow his valiant example in seeking out the truth in their own research about their family\u2019s histories.<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Dougherty, is the archivist who had contacted me, and arranged for my visit with Patrick\u2019s Family History Group.\u00a0 I was very excited to go to Arnprior because I have maternal ancestral roots that reach deep into Renfrew County.\u00a0 I asked Laurie if it would be ok if I had a look at some of the land records in the archives .\u00a0 Well I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>The archive contains a wonderful land records collection for Renfrew County\u00a0which I was very excited to view.\u00a0 Visiting this archive was an item that was on my bucket list of things to do, but I had never gotten around to actually going for a visit.<\/p>\n<p>By tracing the census records for the family prior to my visit I\u00a0could identify where the family lived in the region.\u00a0 Knowing the lot and concession made it possible to quickly locate the family in the land records.\u00a0 \u00a0Being able to trace my great-grand grandparent\u2019s land title history was fascinating.\u00a0 The deed of land just happens to also resolve some issues about name spellings.\u00a0 Who would have thought that an indenture would explain that Rosanna Corrigan, was as it states, \u201csometimes called Rose Ann Corrigan.\u201c \u00a0\u00a0This is not what I was expecting to find, but this simple\u00a0fact is great because it clears up why her name was spelled differently in a variety of records.<\/p>\n<p>There is something so exciting about actually running your fingers across, and touching the documents that your ancestors signed so long ago.\u00a0 I followed the paper records trail back to the original Crown land patent that was issued to the Cull Family on the 22<sup>nd<\/sup> of November in 1875.\u00a0 Rosanna\u2019s first husband was Michael Cull, and sadly he died on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> of June, in 1873 at the age of 35 from typhoid fever.\u00a0 Rosanna married my great-grandfather Michael Corrigan on the 8<sup>th<\/sup> of February in\u00a01875.<\/p>\n<p>I highly recommend a visit to this particular archives with over 247 described fonds\/collections\u00a0you will not be disappointed, and the friendly service simply makes this archive even that much better!<\/p>\n<p>Please do take a look at the hours of operation, view\u00a0further details\u00a0on their website at <a href=\"http:\/\/adarchives.org\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">http:\/\/adarchives.org<\/span><\/a> , and\u00a0remember to\u00a0make an appointment in advance.\u00a0\u00a0 The Arnprior &amp; McNab\/Braeside Archives is located at 21B Madawaska Street, Arnprior, Ontario.\u00a0 \u00a0Telephone:\u00a0 613-623-0001.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last summer I felt really blessed to be invited to speak to Patrick\u2019s Family History Group (http:\/\/www.adarchives.org\/PFHG.htm ), at the Arnprior Library.
